Opportunity Knocks
I am a recent Master in Public Administration (MPA) graduate with three years of experience in energy policy, seeking employment in a Congressional office or committee. My MPA degree, from the George Washington University, focused on public-private partnerships, infrastructure development, and government regulation of society. Working at the GW Solar Institute for the past three years, I have learned to manage multiple responsibilities and a great deal about solar energy issues, as well as, importantly, the impact of politics on policy.
Balancing optimal policy options with political realities is a major challenge for Members of Congress and their staff. Unfortunately, politics often trumps good policy. We need not, however, feel overly pessimistic about our legislative process. Whether in areas related to social policy or technical issues, like energy, information is always the best panacea to combat the ill of fear and untruths. An unwavering willingness to share and accept honest information, and sometimes best-guesses, is the key to good policy, good democracy, and a sustainable society.
